What is Creative Grooming?
Creative grooming is the process in which color, glitter, extensions, creativity etc. are added to the groom of your pet. As little or as much creativity can be added according to your specific needs.
Is it safe and what products are used?
Yes, it is safe. All our products are approved by the National Association of Professional Creative Groomers (NAPCG).There are two ways to dye the coat; temporary or semi-permanent. The temporary color can only be applied to small areas of the coat. There are two adhesives that are used to apply rhinestones and other finishing touches to the coat. One is temporary and can be readily washed off, the other lasts much longer and may need oil, such as vegetable oil, to be completely removed from the coat.
Will the pet have a reaction?
Chances are they won't. However, just as your pet may experience a reaction with any product, even natural or hypoallergenic, it is possible. If your pet has had reactions from shampoos or any other products, we suggest you do not try creative coloring on your pet. Other options such as feather extensions and nail art may still be available. We always apply a small amount of color on a discrete part of your pet before using semi-permanent color to see if their will be a reaction to the dye.
Will the dye color the skin?
Most products do not color the skin, however, some colors and products are more likely to. Darker colors such as black and red are more likely to color the skin, but if it does occur, the color should wash off with just a few baths.
How long will it last?
Temporary color will usually wash off within one to two baths and will rub off. Semi-Permanent dyes will last a bit longer depending on the coat type and product used. Some will last up to 6 months while others will wash out within two to six baths. For finishes adhered to the coat with the temporary adhesive, it will last a few days to a few weeks if the pet leaves it alone. The semi-permanent adhesive can last up to a few months depending on body placement, activity level and coat type.
How long can the process take?
If you would like temporary dyes, earrings or glitter, it may only take several minutes. For semi-permanent work, expect a minimum of 20 minutes in addition to the regular grooming time.
How far in advance should I schedule?
We recommend keeping your pet on a frequent grooming schedule with us between 4-8 weeks. (Call today and ask about our frequent groom program and how you can earn a free groom!) If you want just temporary color, we only need a few days notice. If you want semi-permanent or something specific, we may need several weeks notice. We need to schedule more time to complete creative grooming appointments and we may also need time to order any special dyes or accessories. We usually book out 1-2 weeks in advance most of the year, so the earlier the better for scheduling you appointment, especially around holidays.
Can it be done after shaving my pet?
YES! Often times this is the most ideal condition for you pet to be colored. The hair is shorter, therefore giving a smooth canvas to work on. If your pet is severely matted and we are shaving him/her, we will not be able to apply color at this appointment. You will need to reschedule a creative grooming session after the matting has been taken care of and the skin/coat has a chance to repair itself.
How much does it cost?
Cost is dependent on a number of factors including amount of work requested. However, temporary dye applications starts at around $8. Semi-permanent color starts at around $15 and rhinestones and embellishments at $5. Please call for more accurate pricing. All pricing is in addition to the cost of the regular grooming.
Can I color darker coats?
Yes! We can safely color darker coats with temporary color! As this requires more work, the designs and/or color may not be as vibrant as on a lighter coat, but the result is still desirable. Because the use of bleaching is harmful to the pet, we can not color darker coats with semi-permanent color. Glitter and rhinestones can be applied to darker coats as well.
What designs are offered?
We are able to complete most simple designs such as holiday designs or some sports team logos. Complex designs are not feasible to do in a salon as they take a very long time. Temporary color can only be applied to small areas such as ears or tail or small stencil. Please refer to our photos for some examples.
Can you color cats or other pets?
YES! All of our products are safe to use on any pet with the exception to puppies and kittens 6 months of age or younger.
Can I color my pet if I do not get him/her groomed?
Because bathing is required to apply semi-permanent color, a grooming session is required for all semi-permanent coloring. All other forms of coloring and accessory applications do not require a grooming. However, for best results, a bath is recommended.
What occasions can I color my pet?
ALL OCCASIONS! Color your pet for parties, holidays, sports events, school events, family gatherings and more! Any day is the perfect day for color!
